Historic districts and early 20th-century homes
Lake Worth Beach has several local historic districts, including College Park, South Palm Park, Old Lucerne, Northeast and Southeast Lucerne and Bryant Park. Changing the roof on a contributing property can require historic review, so it is wise to confirm requirements with the city before choosing a material.
Many cottages here were built with board sheathing rather than modern plywood, and decades of re-roofing can leave rot, sagging or mixed materials underneath. A re-roof on an older home can also trigger Florida Building Code upgrades, such as additional deck fastening and a secondary water barrier.
Metal and dimensional shingle are the most common choices on the city's smaller homes, and metal roofs have a long history on local cottages. Mission-style and Mediterranean Revival houses more often carry barrel tile, and low-slope roofs over porches and rear additions appear throughout.
